The gingival margin file (Solnit G.F.) was designed to work on areas where the use of rotary instruments may not be accessible.

Use the 50 micron GF-2 for general purpose work.  This instrument does an excellent job of cutting and shaping composite or glass ionomer materials.   This instrument gives you extremely fine control, only availble with a hand instrument.

Use the 25 micron GF-2 for very delicate work.  The GF-2 does an excellent job of making fine adjustments to your restorations without marking the surface of the material.  This instrument is especially useful for finishing margins and blending tooth structure to the composite or glass ionomer materials.

The GF-3 is a reverse angle, and is availble in both 50 micron and 25 micron diamond grits.  The GF-3 is used in those situations where the standard angle prevents the GF-2 from being used.

COMMON USES FOR GINGIVAL FILES INCLUDE:

1)  Gingival margins on inlays, onlays, and crowns.

2)  Porcelain margins of porcelain fused to metal crowns.   Since the gingival file is diamond grit, it will blend both the tooth structure and the porcelain.

3)  Overlays on amalgam fillings.

4)  Finishing gingival and interproximal surfaces of composites.

5)  Bulk finishing of gold foil margins.
